New Jersey high school students have outraged taxpayers in the state by sharing photos of their “disgusting” lunches. Because taxpayers provide the money for the cafeterias in public schools, New Jersey residents are furious that their money is being mismanaged to the point that they’re serving disgusting food to the hungry high school students. Parents have started promoting their students’ school lunches on social media, which has attracted a lot of attention from people across the country as well as people who sit on New Jersey school boards.

One viral photo showed a chicken cheesesteak sandwich. It depicted a footlong roll adorned with a piece of mystery meat and sad pieces of un-melted American cheese.

Zellie Thomas is a teacher in the Paterson School District. She posted a photo of the disturbing lunch offering on Twitter along with a caption that stated, “Our kids deserve better.”

“We’re using our tax money. We need to know that they are not going to waste it,” said a New Jersey taxpayer who is upset with the school system’s mismanagement of her tax dollars.

The photos have received a lot of attention from people across the country, including some parents in Texas and Missouri, as well as people who sit on New Jersey school boards.

In a statement from the Paterson Public Schools District, they said that student safety and well-being remain their first priority. They are committed to providing healthy meals for students every day since it contributes to an environment where teaching and learning can occur properly.

“We take this very seriously,” Superintendent Eileen Shafer said. “It’s unfortunate that this happened.”

The photos of these meals have gone viral because people want to ensure that their tax dollars aren’t going into a waste disposal system. “I think most people were outraged and disgusted,” Thomas said about the public’s reaction to her photo depicting chicken cheesesteak sandwich with sad pieces of un-melted American cheese. “I didn’t expect it to go viral, but we’re happy that the word is getting out about how poorly students are being fed in Paterson schools.”
