For thirty-one years in a row, television viewers were blessed with a beautiful, heartwarming Hershey’s commercial promoting their popular Hershey’s Kisses. The famous commercial uses the Kisses as bells to play the tune to “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Now, Hershey’s has unveiled a new commercial where they take a little bit of the old one and mix in a new scene involving a father and daughter baking cookies with Hershey’s Kisses on top.
The new commercial is entitled “Bells to Blossoms.” It hopes to bridge the tradition of Christmas with some new flavor to inspire families with ways to infuse Hershey’s Kisses into their Christmas traditions. Although the new commercial starts with the Kisses as holiday bells, a little girl reaches into the picture frame and grabs a Kiss, which she plans to use with her daddy-daughter baking project.
Now that the camera is focused on the adorable daddy-daughter scene, we watch as the little girl opens up the Kiss and places it on the top of a peanut butter cookie to create an iconic peanut butter blossom cookie with Hershey’s Kisses. The new commercial even continues with the same Christmas tune, playing it on exciting brass instruments instead of the same-old bells.
Comments came in droves.
“I don’t mind an ADDITIONAL holiday commercial for Hershey’s, but warping the classic bells commercial SUCKS!” one person commented on the YouTube video of the new ad.
“The perfect representation of 2020: completely ruined!” added another.
“Look forward to original every year. Why change it? Don’t ruin it, just make a separate commercial,” wrote a third.
The criticisms did not just stop on the commercia’s YouTube page. Some people took their outrage to Twitter.
“Hershey’s redoing their Christmas commercial is personally the last straw of 2020 for me,” one person tweeted. “I simply cannot go on without hearing the little Hershey kiss sigh after the performance of his lifetime.”
“Wonder why they changed this commercial. With all the CHANGE that has happened this year for all of us, when it airs, it’s like the official start to the holidays. Maybe do a separate heartwarming commercial with dad & daughter. Hopefully, they will continue to show the original Hershey’s commercial for all our sakes.”
The outrage was felt so much by the chocolate maker that they issued a comment to TODAY Food. They stated that while they did play the original Hershey Kiss commercial until November 23, they hoped to do something new for the holidays.
“We made the decision to make a slight update to the original that kept the opening holiday melodies and incorporated another holiday tradition, baking — melding together these two time-honored traditions,” the statement read. “From playing the bells to baking peanut butter blossoms, it’s Hershey’s Kisses that have stood the test of time.”
“For viewers who love our original – don’t worry, we’ll be running both holiday ads this season,” Hershey’s continued. “Keep your eyes peeled for our classic and iconic Bells spot as well as the newest ‘Bells to Blossoms.’”
